Can A Quick, Green Super Food Be The Weight Loss Answer for Busy People?

As a busy father of four, I find getting enough vegetables in my diet almost impossible. And I often feel guilty when my children aren’t receiving their fair share of green goodness either.

Why is this important? Because in order to fight disease, keep your mind sharp, and lose weight… you need to eat between 5 and 7 servings of vegetables a day.

How many servings of vegetables have YOU eaten today?

Because I started hearing from customers that they have the same challenges… I went on a quest for a fast, convenient way to get 5-7 servings a day.

Green Drinks to the Rescue?

This brought me to the idea of green drinks. These are powders containing concentrated vegetables and fruits that have incredible nutritional profiles.

I thought my problem was solved…

After reading several labels, however, the drinks seemed to be nothing but grasses, designed more for cows than for people. And they really just didn’t taste that good (which is an understatement).

But after talking to some more people, I was introduced to a different, more comprehensive kind of green drink – a “food cocktail” that changed my perspective entirely.

Athletic Greens: A Step Above The Rest

A friend of mine is also friends with New York Times best-selling author Tim Ferris, author of The 4-Hour Body (a great read). And through this relationship I was introduced to Chris Ashenden, the creator of a product called Athletic Greens.

After speaking with Chris, it became apparent that there’s a lot of misinformation circulating about vitamin products, green drinks, and super food cocktails.

Enough so that even if I did enjoy the taste of the other green drinks I had tried, I probably still wouldn’t want to consume them.

This Nutritional Powerhouse Somehow Tastes Good

Before expanding on what I learned, I just have to tell you that Athletic Greens tastes good… really good. I still don’t understand how they pulled it off. I actually enjoy drinking it.

So what is in this stuff, and why is it different?

First, let’s talk about what is NOT in it. No GMO’s (genetically modified organisms), yeast, peanuts, animal products, herbicides, wheat, pesticides, synthetic chemicals, artificial colors/flavors, preservatives, sweeteners, eggs, dairy, gluten, corn, lactose, sucrose, or dextrose.

This is a long list, and as a supplement formulator I can tell you it’s extremely difficult and expensive to pull off. What it means is that opposed to any other “green drink,” there are no corners cut.

Here’s what IS in 12 Grams of Complete Nutrition

Unlike traditional green drinks, Athletic Greens contains far more than just greens. It actually contains four categories of super foods.

1. Alkaline, Raw, Greens: These super foods are freeze-dried to preserve their structure and to lock in the nutrients. They are also cold milled so as not to damage the enzymes (this is rare).

2. Nutrient Dense Natural Herbs and Antioxidants: These are all extracted from raw foods for maximum absorbability. One serving contains the antioxidant equivalent of 10-12 servings of fruits and vegetables (this is more than a day’s worth).

3. Probiotics and Naturally Occurring Enzymes: I can’t tell you how important natural enzymes and probiotics are for your gut and your ability to absorb nutrients. These are dairy-free probiotics and enzymes so you do not have to worry about allergies.

4. Essential Minerals & Vitamins: The proper vitamins & minerals are necessary for doing essential things like regulating blood sugar, healthy hormone levels, regulating nerve function, and much more. And unlike most minerals you may get from supplements… these are readily absorbed by your body. And as you might know, it’s very hard to get the proper minerals from diet alone. But each serving of Athletic Greens contains all the vitamins and minerals you need.

Throw Away Your Multi-Vitamin?

One thing you will find if you study the label and talk to Chris is that by taking just one serving a day, you really don’t need to take a multi-vitamin anymore.

In fact, most multi-vitamins are synthetic and not readily absorbable… Athletic Greens replaces even the even the most high-end multi-vitamin.

You also don’t need your probiotic or enzyme supplement either. You still need your Omega-3 source, protein, fruits and specialty formulas, but this has most other basic nutritional requirements completely covered… and it tastes good!

Is This an Anti-Aging Formula?

I believe taking one serving a day of Athletic Greens is a good move especially if you are getting older.

What I can say from experience and talking to a lot of my peers is that (especially when combined with RealMeal GF™) I simply feel better, stronger and younger.

So even though it’s designed for elite athletes, you don’t need to be one to benefit. It delivers a nice even energy boost without the peaks and valleys of stimulant-laced energy drinks.

How to Try Some for Yourself

As you can tell, I am pretty high on this stuff! But if I were you, I would just go to their web page and do some reading to find out more more yourself… there are more facts than I can mention here.

Make sure to read the list of 76 Ingredients, it’s truly impressive.

And don’t let the pictures of all of those young athletes scare you!

Although it was designed for elite athletes, it’s absolutely perfect for regular people like you and me.

I will tell you that Athletic Greens is not inexpensive. It’s simply impossible to provide high quality formulas like this at a low price. I’m a big believer that you get what you pay for, and with Athletic Greens you certainly do.

Just price out Chris’ ingredients and if you are like me you will still be scratching your head as to why it doesn’t cost a LOT more.

  1. Tomas says:

Would REALLY love to try this product but they only supply USA and Canada and I live in Thailand

  2. Garry Trelease says:

When will Athletic Greens be available in Australia ?

  3. Colin says:

Dr Steve – I sometimes wonder if you even read your own articles.

This article (read above) is about ATHLETIC GREENS and NOT about your weightloss formula.

the article is signed by you so I am guessing you know what is in it. Athletic Greens are not available outside the US and Canada therefore the article is really of no use to anyone outside the US or Canada.

    • Colin says:

But its your article, your recommendation lol!

I think you completely miss the point as with others above.

Why review/recommend/write about something on your worldwide-available site when the product isnt available?

Why not write about more relevant products instead?

      • Dr. Steve says:

Hi Colin – I’m sorry for the confusion. At RealDose, our mission is to deliver remarkable health improvements that make people’s lives better. In our articles, we try to achieve that mission by imparting as much useful health information as possible. When we talk about a product we try to describe it in detail so that people understand the science and research that sets it apart. You do bring up a good point, our newsletters and articles are distributed worldwide, however, if we report about a product, it may not be available worldwide. Unfortunately we are unable to filter the emails to be sent to certain areas, and don’t want our regular subscribers to miss out on an article either. Athletic Greens is available in the US and Canada and hopefully worldwide someday soon.

  4. Hiyumma says:

Hello: Just received my bottle today. How long does it take to work?

    • Dr. Steve says:

      Hi Hiyumma,
Thanks for writing in. Each persons metabolism responds in a different amount of time. Sometimes it can take some time to kick in and begin working, so be patient, and continue with a healthy eating plan and exercising. A good goal is to lose about 1-2 lbs per week.

  5. corrie says:

I have been taking Green Vibrance for quite some time and I was wondering if you had tried this one and found it wanting. It tastes fine to me and I mix it with almond or coconut milk. Just wondering.

    • Dr. Steve says:

Hi Corrie – I think it definitely helps to add some sort of other flavored beverage to it. Almond, coconut, soy or regular milk are all good choices. Thanks!

  6. Laura says:

Thanks for the info on Athletic Greens. After reading their website I could not determine whether this product is manufactured using GMP (like your RealDose) which is an important consideration for any supplement I purchase. Also, I have a history of hormone-sensitive breast cancer, are there any ingredients I should watch out for? Thank you.

    • Dr. Steve says:

Hi Laura – Thank you for writing in. I am not sure if the Athletic Greens is a GMP product, this may take a call to their info line. For the history of estrogen sensitive breast cancer, I would consult your oncologist about this to be sure, but I wouldn’t believe so since this product is not soy based. I hope that helps!

  7. sally says:

How does this compare to Green Vibrance?

    • Hi Sally – Thank you for your comment. Just from taking a basic look at Green Vibrance, though I don’t know their brand well, it seems their product doesn’t contain much protein at all. This affects many aspects of the product, namely, it will not be able to control your hunger nearly as well as other products with a higher protein content.
      I hope that helps!

  8. Sandra Howard says:

I just ordered the Athletic Greens for the same reasons you describe in your article. I am looking forward to sharing my results in a few weeks.

  9. Rick Macaulay says:

    Hi Steven,

Can you share with us how long you have been using this product and if you have noticed anything from using it
    other than feeling “stronger”?

    • Hi Rick,

Thank you for writing in and for posting your question! On and off, I have been using Athletic Greens for close to two years now. They do make me feel stronger, more alert and energetic for hours. Hope this helps! Have a healthy day!

  10. Jeannine says:

A quick search online of Athletic Greens reveals several customers complaining about predatory sales practices. Despite this, I decided to try ordering a single bottle. I am very disappointed to report that my single-bottle, one-time purchase had turned into a charge for a 2-bottle, recurring “loyalty program” charge. Fortunately, they adjusted the charge when I called. I would caution everyone to be VERY CAREFUL in ordering from this company to ensure you get what you want and nothing more.

    • Hi Jeannine,

Thank you for writing in and for sharing your concerns with us! I am terribly sorry that issues arose with your order. The company Athletic Greens is a separate and independent group from RealDose Nutrition and is one of our partners in offering healthy products which we know can make a positive difference. That said, while I am glad that your order status has been updated and resolved, I will be letting them know of this concern as well. Hope this helps! Have a healthy day!
