Brown Fat – Don’t Be Left Out In the Cold!

Cold temperatures could help you shiver your way to skinny There’s yet another “weight loss breakthrough” making the rounds in scientific circles… and this time it’s none other than fat itself.

Seems ironic, maybe even contradictory, until you realize that the research and buzz is about a unique and rare type of adipose tissue – referred to as “brown fat” – that bears very little resemblance to the ugly body fat we tend to loathe.

Brown fat – typically stored in small amounts around the neck – is officially referred to as brown adipose tissue (BAT), and is one of two main types of fat found in humans.

The Buzz Over Brown Fat

So why all the recent attention over brown fat? One reason is that a study led by Andre Carpentier at the University Hospital of Sherbrooke (first reported in the Journal of Clinical Investigation1) found that brown fat activity was increased in response to colder temperatures.

More importantly, they found men burned more calories when brown fat was activated by cold exposure — about 250 calories in three hours.

The big promise, or so it seems, is that if scientists can find a way to increase brown fat stores – whether by lifestyle changes or [ahem] drugs – then it could be at least part of the answer to the multi-billion-dollar weight loss puzzle.

More Brown Fat Research

In a study published in the Journal Science, a group led by Stephan Herzig at the German Cancer Research Center found a way to manipulate white fat into acting more like calorie-burning brown fat2.

To do this, they stimulated an enzyme known as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which plays a role in a variety of physiologic functions, from regulating blood pressure to controlling inflammation and contracting muscles.

Finally, the discovery that a hormone called irisin can increase brown fat in mice has health bloggers going crazy3. The possibility that stimulating this hormone might lead to greater brown fat stores and weight loss is certainly enticing.

Is Brown Fat The Answer to All of Our Weight Loss Troubles?

With some of these initial developments, it would seem that brown fat might be the medical breakthrough we have all been looking for. Just increase brown fat, and burn more calories by doing next to nothing.

However, I’d exercise a bit of caution before believing the hype – for several reasons:

1) COX-2 stimulation could INCREASE inflammation.

Most drugs on the market work by inhibiting COX-2, and there is a reason for that. COX-2 is an enzyme directly involved in the symptoms of inflammation and pain. To attempt to do the opposite in the name of increasing brown fat activation could be short-sighted.4 (Future articles and content from me will address inflammation in far greater detail, since I believe it is THE most pressing health crisis facing us today.)

2) Irisin is a total unknown

It is simply too early to tell whether animal studies will translate to humans without unintended side effects. About 10 years ago everyone was excited about the hormone Leptin based on animal studies5. However, in humans, increasing leptin created no weight loss results. (This is because of leptin resistance resulting from inflammation by the way.)

3) Cold exposure simply is not pleasant

The most promising and (in my opinion) safest part of the brown fat phenomenon is the results attained through cold exposure.

Subjects in multiple studies were able to achieve greater brown fat activation by exposing themselves to temperatures in the 60 degree range (of course with no protective clothing) while dipping their feet in ice water periodically.

Personally, I simply do not see most people doing this on a regular basis! It is kind of like exercising regularly and eating right. We might know it works… but we just don’t want to do it. I would put cold exposure in this bucket.

Furthermore, the calories burned are not necessarily from the activation of brown fat. By simply lowering the temperature around you, you force your body to burn more calories just to keep you warm. This is why drinking ice water is a pretty effective calorie burner.

Finally, it is not clear whether the cold exposure is cumulative in terms of creating and activating brown fat. If the results were cumulative and long lasting, then I think the promise would be much higher. If not, I am afraid this simply will not be adopted by a majority of the population.

Conclusion – Don’t Be Left Out In The Cold

I’ll be the first to admit that the initial research on brown fat shows promise. But it’s nothing earth-shattering… not yet, at least. If you are a brave soul who is willing to shiver your way thin, please post below and we can do some kind of informal experiment.

Also, I’d love to hear any other thoughts or concerns you have in the comment section below.

And finally, whether it’s brown fat or anything else, let’s continue to stay skeptical of so-called “breakthroughs” until the evidence is conclusive and the benefits are undeniable.

Your body will thank you for it.

Until next time,

Dr. Steven Sisskind

A brown fat stimulating drug was featured on BBC’s tomorrows world in the 80′s,what ever happened to that??

    • Dr. Steve says:

Scientists have been researching ways to activate brown fat for many years, however the formulas developed had too many side effects to be used safely for weight loss. Here is an article from the New York Times you might find interesting:

Hi i going through menopause im taken your pills for that and i also want to lose weight at the same time do i need to do anything extra beside diet and exercise. will these pills help. with weight loss.

        • Hi Karen,

Thank you for writing in and for sharing your concerns with us! As you enter perimenopause and menopause, the metabolism gradually slows. It’s very important to understand how keeping your systems balanced by making healthy food choices, exercising and getting 8 hours of sleep each night, helps in coping with the changes your body is experiencing and in losing weight during this time. Try making the majority of your diet rich in a variety of vegetables and fruits. Also limit your daily intake of saturated fats, opting instead for foods with high Omega 3 fats such as salmon, avocados, nuts and olive oil. It’s also important to find an activity you enjoy doing. Not only will it help you to burn extra calories, you will start to feel younger, stronger and healthier. Hope this helps! Have a healthy day!

Dear Dr. Steve: Your advice/help is needed.
I have been on the program for 19 days now.
I have been a A+ student as far as following the guidelines.
My first question for you is since I have not lost one pound yet, should I go on to continue the pills for a second month?
I am reading about all the terrific results.
My second question is: Do you recommend any jump start helping ideas?
Thank you in advance for you response.
    Jo Jo

    • Cecil says:

      Hi Jo JO,

I just started this program and would love to hear the response.

Since I started the jump start before the pill arrived I have lost 3 pounds in a week. I was looking forward to the pills doubling this.

      Talk soon

      • Karen says:

I have been pretty successful and thought I might share a couple things I told my sister. One thing is that I’ve been really keeping track of calories– something I was loathe to do for years– and on one of the sites that comes up when I google calories for a particular food (calorie king) there is a box to put in your height, weight, sex, age, etc and then it asks for your level of activity. The read-out then tells you a range of calories to eat to lose/maintain/gain. I have found that if I am at the low end of those calories, I do in fact lose. If I do more exercise that day (farm work instead of taxes, etc), I see the difference the next morning. Maybe you’re already doing all this. Good luck!

    • Dr. Steve says:

Hi Jo Jo, there can be various reasons why you haven’t lost weight. Everyone is different and our metabolisms can respond in different amounts of time. What and when we eat, lack of sleep and exercise, and sometimes medical conditions or medications can all hinder weight loss. Have you incorporated the diet changes we have described in the Fatloss Fast Start program, into your meals and snacks? If you don’t currently have a healthy eating plan, Weight Watchers is a good plan you can use. You might also research “The Fat Resistance Diet” by Leo Galland M.D. This book has extensive meal plans which
are similar to what we recommend in our program. If you are currently closely monitoring your caloric intake and getting plenty of exercise, you might consider seeing your personal physician for a checkup.

    • Kay says:

      Jo Jo
I was on the program for a while too before I started losing weight. I was discouraged too. I noticed that I lost inches before any weight loss began. Stick with it though. Although it has not been as fast as I would have liked, I have lost 18 pounds. I am so excited!! People are beginning to notice and that’s even more exciting. I haven’t had a lot of time for exercise either. I have just been watching what I eat and taking the supplement before eating. I am going to stick with it. Trust me, it works.

  3. kitt says:

    Hi Dr. Steve,

I just want to ask regarding this article. How come some people recommend drinking warm water or tea so that you stay slim. But in this article it’s contradictory? Can u recommend the proper way or time to drink water after eating? They say we must drink 30 mins after or b4? What is ur opinion on this? Thanks.

    • Dr. Steve says:

The human body is largely composed of water, making consumption a vital part of survival. Drinking adequate amounts also has been touted for numerous health benefits and it appears that it could help in the battle of the bulge. When it comes to drinking water to facilitate weight loss, you probably will reap optimal benefit by drinking it before meals rather than after. Just drinking water, however, will not produce such dramatic results that you do not need to follow the basic tenets of weight loss, such as eating less and exercising more. Also, as it turns out, the temperature of the water may make a tiny difference. But the most important thing is drinking it.

  4. ron smith says:

Can you tell me where your research is published? Links to it?
Might your supplements interact with medication such as a statin, warfarin etc?
Might it be better – if on medication – to introduce one supplement at a time in case of an interaction? I’d be glad of your advice.

Lastly is the product licenced by the FDA?

    • Dr. Steve says:

      Hi Ron,
Thank you for your interest in RealDose Nutrition products. Weightloss Formula No. 1 is not a drug but rather a nutritional supplement. 5. Debra says:

From experience, I typically lose weight better naturally in the cooler seasons — Fall, Winter and Spring. Fall seems the best season for me to concentrate and succeed. Without getting chilled, I keep the house cool even through Winter — in San Diego this is not very cold. If I keep my torso and feet warm, I don’t mind the coolness on my limbs.

Summer seems my worst season in terms of comfort and weight gain — even though I am eating lighter type foods. I don’t like to use unnatural air conditioning so I drink lots of cold, cold water and take cold showers to bring my body temp down. Saunas make me miserable in general.

Perhaps these things are because I am a highland lassie ? :-D.

  6. Melanie says:

I just started the cold shower routine. I read it not only helped to activate brown fat, but also gave you more energy to face the day. The second part I have definitely experienced. I don’t feel like falling asleep before lunch and late afternoon anymore. More energy would seem I could move more and , hence, burn more calories? By the way, it is not a ‘cold shower’. At the end of my hot shower I gradually turn off the hot leaving me in cold eventually. It is not a shock to your system that way. Personally, I will continue to do it.

  7. Peg says:

I took your Real Dose weight loss formula for a couple of weeks. I did not lose any weight. but I did notice that my rough skin became soft and supple. I have had rough skin my whole life & it worsened after menopause, I loved that your product softened my skin, but then I became concerned and stopped taking the product. I have had 4 breast lumpectomies for hyperplasia with atypia and am still very high risk for breast cancer. I also was diagnosed with another glandular/endocrine system cancer & that tumor was removed. I have been told by all of my doctors not to take hormone replacement therapy, because when you have a risk of cancer, hormones are like stepping on the gas pedal for development. Does your product have hormones in it that would increase my risk of cancer recurrence? I loved having my skin to soften, but I am wondering if it was because of hormones in the product and if it may be dangerous for me.

    • Dr. Steve says:

Hi Peg, Thanks for writing in and for the great feedback. The positive changes you’ve noticed in your skin may be attributed to your body changing and becoming healthier. That’s exciting !
To answer you question, the hormones related to breast, ovarian and other types of cancer are reproductive hormones such as estrogen, progestorone and testosterone. These are also the hormones effected by meno-pause. There are many hormones in your body like insulin, thyroid hormones, growth hormone, epinephrine, etc. RealDose does not effect your reproductive hormones, nor does it contain hormones. However, if you do have a question about the effects of RealDose and a medication or medical condition, you should always consult with your physician.

  8. David Roberts says:

    Dr. Steve,
Not sure about the cold showers or “brown fat”.

I’ve been taking your supplement for the last 2 months. I’ve also been on a Doctor-supervised exercise and nutrition program.

My exercise started out with 20 to 30 minutes of cadio per day, light to moderate effort, usually walking or rowing. It has gradually increased in intensity as I become more fit. I actually look forward to it every day.

My nutrition plan consists of 1200 to 1500 calories about 55% protein, 25% Fat, and 20% Carbs.
I eat every 2 to 3 hours, 6 to 7 times per day, small meals, about 100 to 250 calories each time, however, most of my calories are consumed in the mornings for breakfast and just after my exercise.
I take real dose 3 time per day as directed and NEVER feel hungry.
    I also take Omega III, a multi-vitamin, and a pro-biotic each day.
My biggest supplement is WATER. I drink 80 to 150 oz per day.
    Every day!!!

When I started this plan mid-March 2012, I was dropping 8 to 11 pounds per week. The loss has slowed to 4 to 6 per week and I expect to slow more as I reach my goal weight and body fat percentage.

My starting weight was 277.4, 22 March, 2012
My goal is around 190 to 200 and 8 to 10% body fat.
This morning I weighed in at 221.8!

I feel that your product has helped me on my path to a healthier me.

This experience has been life-altering! The greatest lessons are controlling the things that are controllable, being honest with myself, and positive thinking!

Thanks for the help Dr. Steve

  9. Alvilta says:

Oh I am also willing to try the experiment of putting my feet in cold water daily and getting into my cold swimming pool. I live in the upper Northeast and the pool is rarely hot…so I’ll do that rather than the cold shower. And will post my results after doing so for 1 month. My current weight lost is approximately 1 1/2 pounds each two weeks. Please tell me how long I should soak my feet and for how long I should stay in the cold pool this summer.

    • Dr. Steve says:

Hi Alvita – Unfortunately the research out does not signify what amount of time would be best, so I’m unable to give any answer on this. Whatever you decide on trying, keep consistent and check back with us to let us know how it’s going. This brown fat research stuff is exciting, but we’re not quite to the point where we can give recommendations. Thanks!

  10. MaryAnne says:

Cold showers are pleasant sometimes . . . . but I prefer hot.

I am interested in information re: Inflammation ….foods that help to reduce it and other actions or steps we can take that will help to reduce it.

I had the pills for awhile but was too busy to get started. I just started.

Thanks for emails which I find interesting and helpful.

    • Dr. Steve says:

Hi MaryAnne – Inflammation is the key… to many things which we don’t yet completely understand. Inflammation is behind disease, cancer, weight gain and many other ailments. However, what we do know is that there are many things you can do to regulate this inflammation and even effectively lower it. You want to have a diet rich in anti-oxidants, as this lowers your inflammation. There is no one specific food which will get rid of all of your inflammation though, which is why it’s best to have a wide variety of colorful fruits and vegetables in your diet. Each plant you eat has antioxidants that work in slightly different ways to better your health and decrease your inflammation, so try to consume a large variety. Also, daily exercise helps us lower inflammation significantly. Try to get 2 sessions a week of strengthening exercises and aerobic activity for at least 20 minutes a day on most days of the week. Lastly, tea and coffee are packed full of anti-oxidants (especially green tea). I hope this helps! Thanks for contacting us!

  11. Nancy says:

I’m willing to try dipping in the cold. I just started adding swimming as part of my exercise regiment. The water isn’t freezing but nippy. I also drink ice water (3 to 5 glasses) daily. We’ll see if the swimming will help. I’ll keep you posted. Thanks for your articles. I look forward to them.

  12. Linda ray says:

I suggest a more moderate approach. I have had promising results over the past month swimming laps in probably 80 degree water. Most days I do 100 laps. When I’m pressed for time, I only do 50. At first it took me an hour 45. But lately I’m doing it with a lot less rest, and got the time down to an hour 5. Sure it’s cardio. But in cold water, I’m getting better results than treadmill elliptical or Zumba.

  13. Martha says:

I don’t might cold, dipping in the cold will be fun.
Thank you for all this good information.
i been in the program for 2 months and only lost one pound.
is there anything i can do?
should i keep taking all the pills? i have one more bottle.

    Thanks for your articles.

    • Dr. Steve says:

Hi Martha, Thanks for writing in. Weight loss is never easy and can sometimes be extremely frustrating. It’s important to know,
success with Weight Loss Formula No. 1 can often take longer than you might expect, as your hormones and body need to re-adjust and respond to the changes you
are making. Many customers tell us they only start seeing results after taking Formula No. 1 for two to three months or more.
A healthy rate of weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week, so keep that in mind when you set your expectations. Studies document the benefits of encouragement by
others. A good support network lets you share triumphs, bemoan setbacks and strategize solutions.

I realize you purchased Weight Loss Formula No.1 to enhance your weight loss efforts and get you on the path to a healthier
life. I’m not sure if you’ve heard of our Healthy Life Program, but you might want to contact our customer care center and ask about it.
We have found that one of the best ways to succeed is by getting support from knowledgeable, caring people who can help with your challenges and keep you on track toward your
goals. You can talk to a coach who will help you troubleshoot and offer additional support and advice. Contact us at and ask about the Healthy Life Program.

We look forward to hearing back from you and working together with you to achieve your health and weight loss goals.

  14. Hi Dr. Steve, My shower only lasts for 15 min. of hot water. I use to stay in for 1/2 hour. Apparently, when I had a new bathroom put in, it stopped my hot water. So, I get cold water more quickly, faster then I care to. It is so nice not to have cold water. But, since you think it will inviguate one and help with loosing weight, I will consider it for just one minute. I’ve heard that men in the service take cold showers to help with certain sexual problems, is that true? I finished one of your bottles.Lost a little weight so far. I enjoy the blog. My website is Hope you like it. Thanks for your help. Sincerely, Esther

  15. Joni says:

Cold showers sounds pretty silly to me, compared to a healthier diet and exercise, and I’d rather burn those extra calories walking, running, hiking, etc., which for me personally is way more fun than being cold. :)

For those getting frustrated: I know the RealDose diet doesn’t really go here to any extreme, but I’ve spent a lot of years trying to find a solution to cravings and what’s worked best for me, finally, is the combination (not just one or the other) of your formula AND a quite low-carb diet, most specifically avoiding sugar and flour and limiting fruit (the hardest part). I think every body may be a little different, since I have a friend who does extraordinarily well on low-fat diets instead (though her hair and skin suffer for it), but for me, that insulin response thing does appear to be a factor. I highly recommend Gary Taubes’ books.

    • Dr. Steven Sisskind MD says:

Hi Joni, Thanks for the great feedback! I agree, there is nothing better than a healthy diet and plenty of exercise! I’m not familiar with Gary Taubes, I’ll have to check it out.

  16. Kathie says:

For those of us on Cox2 inhibitor meds for blood pressure control- do these contribute to increased weight and/or difficulty loosing weight?

  17. Barbara Daugherty says:

I read a very long time ago that you should leave children alone to decide for themselves whether they were warm or cold and needed a coat or jacket. That if you constantly made them wear jackets outside when they really didn’t need or want them, that they would eventually lose their brown fat. I see too many parents doing just that.

I did really good the 1st month, so I ordered another 6 month supply. Am on my 3rd bottle.Have lost 20-25 lbs. I feel so much better when I dont cheat, but am getting bored cooking all the meals ahead of time..If I dont eat like the plan says, my weight loss stops, then I gain and it takes a week to start losing again, I am post menopausal, age 52 and weigh 220lbs. I was 240 lbs.I have binged a few times on chocolate.I am getting boils again too. Any suggestions on how to stick with the meal plans?

    • Hi Patty – I’m glad you wrote in. Our diet is based on the Fat Resistance Diet and if you are looking for more variety in your meals, I would recommend you pick up this book by Dr. Leo Galland. In it, he lists several recipes and meal plans that could be extremely beneficial. I will also have one of our agents email you a meal plan that lists some recipes as well. Good luck!

    • Susan says:

Boils… as in skin condition? I suffered from Acne Rosacea for years, hence my antiobiotic toxicity in the system. Even though I cured myself after stopping the antibiotics 4 years ago, I have learned that the yeast / candida in our system causes or exacerbates Skin / acne/ ROSACEA conditions. Try the MEGA doses of Acidophilus strains in capsule form. A cup of yogurt wont cut it. Find the highest dose in your health food store and then take 3 of them or so…you may be needed tens of billions units of the strains to help with your boils. Also, wine and alcohol of all varieties will cause boils and acne issues on my facial skin. Drinking water to flush out toxins cant hurt.

  19. Robert J. Maderia Sr., PhD says:

As a natural science manager of physiological & behavior intervention (1979-2012),and an adjunct professor of anatomy & physiology; the discovery of structural and functional Brown Fat is not news!

In fact, Brown Adipose tissue is the derivative of angiogensis (i.e.,blood vessels extending into fat tissue,to supply nutrients not associated with normal adipose tissue structure and function). This is a natural homeopathic occurence
in specific regions of the human body, for specific structural and functional purpose.

Euthenics (i.e.,the science concerned with changing intrinsic environments to improve human species) dictates; we should only seek to improve on the intrinsic nature of brown fat and consider the source of adipose tissue structure and
functions. Also, angiogensis of normal adipose tissue (fat) in the human body results in a completely new problematic and regeneration of fat cells. So, instead of angiogensis turning fat into Brown Fat, it just fuels the generation of more fat tissue.

Some thirty years ago there was a British study that showed how BAT burned calories and how thin people had very active BAT.The study also showed that wemon whom made munitions by hand in WWII got thiner and thiner because the Nitro Glicerin leaching through the skin of there hands activated their BAT. I wonder what the side effects of the Nitro would be in the long run. I would like to see this study again but can not find it.I saw it then on some TV program.

I am 5′ 71/4 inches tall but weigh 195 lbs. Last year June I weighed 228 lbs With the help of a Gym Instructor,
by the end o November, 2012 I weighed 216 lbs. I stopped eating junk and still drink 12 glasses of room-temperature water. My goal is to weigh 170 by June, 30 2013.

My question to you is, “Are you sure that cold water is an effective fat burner? I have heard the exact opposite. Please explain.

I am 51 years old and looks forward to hearing more from you to assist me in reaching my weight loss goal and keeping the weight off this time.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Be blessed.

    • Hi Gillian – Thank you for writing in. Congratulations on your weight loss and I hope your goal is going quite well at this time! The body burns extra calories to regulate it’s temperature in response to BOTH hot and cold. The theory is that cold water drinking results in a slight metabolic increase to produce more body heat (as does sleeping with less blankets). When the body is over heated and begins to sweat, this also results in a slightly increased metabolic rate. Though drinking hot water rarely results in people sweating, thus cold water is usually recommended. Overall though, this is just a very mild effect and should in no way be valued over daily exercise and good diet. Best of luck!

    Hi dr steve
Your real dose weight loss is working great for me It is kind of slow & steady process of weight loss for me but your omega 3 pills are giving me constipation I even tried taking them 1 pill a day but it still feels the same So I don’t know what to do I still have to loose a lot so ii topped taking them Why is that happening ? I thought it would help me speed up my weight loss program Please advice

    • Hello Anjaya,

I am sorry to hear that you feel that the Omega-3 is causing you constipation. Everyone’s body is different and there may be something about your internal system that is sensitive to the ingredients in the Omega-3. If you feel that you are having a reaction to the pills, I recommend that you stop taking it immediately and if your constipation continues, please contact your personal physician.

I will have one of our RealCare team members contact you in regard to your refund for your purchase of the Omega-3 TG.

Since you are already taking Weight Loss Formula No. 1, your weight loss efforts will be enhanced with the ingredients that are found in it. We have many customers who have reached their weight loss goals using just that product. I hope that eases your mind. Make it a healthy day!

    • Susan says:

Anjaya, have you tried Aloe Lax from the Health Food store? It is a capsule of natural ingredients that works wonderfully for smooth bowel movements without diahreah.

  23. Susan says:

I have not yet finished my first bottle of Real Dose. I do notice it has helped me to stop thinking about food in the first part of the day. I am endeavoring to remember to take my second dose in the evenings to see if that will increase the effectiveness/spur weight loss. As for all the mention of cold vs. brown fat- I can mention this: Years ago in the 1960′s, my skinny mother with skinny thighs moved to England, when mini skirts were all the rage. After just 3 years, she noted that her thighs had grown a layer of fat due to the cold temperatures year round. Summers were very mild and still required a sweater most days. After she moved back to the US- she said her thighs returned to their skinny normal. Now think about Eskimos= they are usually not lithe beings..being in the cold all the time? Wouldnt the body try to create a protective fat layer for warmth if continuously exposed to cold temps?
Lastly, I want to mention about the exceptional follow up call I received from one of the nutritionist persons working with Dr. Steve. I had elected to sign up for the free consultations, and a few days later got the call. What I learned speaking with ( Jan? ) was life changing. I am something of a sleuth when it comes to my health and body and particularly weight. I was searching metabolism boosters, hormone distruptors, menopause weight gain issues, food allergies..anything that could explain my inability to lose weight at this stage in my life. Finally after more than an hour after speaking with this representative about my life history, she alerted me to the fact that my overuse of antibiotics for a few decades ( for Rosacea/ Acne ) may have caused a Leaky Gut condition, which I had never considered before. Please know everyone, what I learned: when your gut lining/ gut health is destroyed, food leaks through your gut/ Colon ( ? ) and into your blood stream, which it is not supposed to do. So your body signals a toxic condition and send out these fat cells for the purpose of incasing these toxic microscopic particles in your body. So now imagine fat cells streaming throughout your body swallowing up these toxins every time you put food into your body…even healthy food! I have long said my body looks like I am wearing a fat suit in my photos. I am 5 ft 7 and 175 lbs. That is about 35 pounds above my normal weight I enjoyed until my 30′s. Most people would not guess I have issues about my weight- I went from a size 8 to a size 10 or now 12. Let me emphasize that the time the Real Dose nutritionist spent with me was completely generous, sincere, and genuine. I have not experienced anything like this from any doctor in my entire life. Nobody has gotten to the bottom of this issue with me before and always shrugged it off saying: Eat Less, Exercise more. Currently my feet are sore and blistered from exercising the past 8 months, so I know it’s not that cut and dried. I had expected a follow up email asking my opinion on the consult but did not find one. Dr Steve, please send it. I want everyone to know how valuable that consult was for me to set me on to researching the Leaky Gut issue. I plan to take mega Probiotics she suggested. But will also need to learn more . I just can’t thank you and your staff enough for the effort that was spent reaching out to me and LISTENING and coming up with some intelligent conclusisions as she did. Please let me know if I got the name right for her. I immediately left on a 3 week vacation after our phone call and may have forgotten it. Many Thanks, SUsan W. , Ft Lauderdale

I read the amazing research and the papers on brown fat in 1980-1981. There were also interesting arguments on stimulating it along with proposed eating plans.

    Hello Dr Steve
First I would like to commend you and your team for taking time to make sure all comments/questions made on your blog are answered. It is fantastic to see you care and are giving advice based on each individuals journey. I have been on RealDose Weight Lose Formula 1 for 2 months now. I have had fantastic results losing 10kgs during this time, I am exercising daily, drink plenty of water and eat a healthy balanced diet. At the same time I have been taking RealDose I have also been on Herbalife Chitosan & Cell U Lose tablets. I am just checking that this combination is OK. I obviously don’t want to be taking products that are either the same or may contradict each other. If you could advise, it would be most appreciated.
    Thank you

    • Hi Margaret,

Thank you for sharing concerns and thoughts with us! We, your RealDose Nutrition family, are always ready to help you with your concerns. We try our best not only to meet your needs in terms of weight loss but ensure that you stay healthy all throughout your journey. As for Herbal Life and Cellulose Tablets, our formula, RealDose Weight Loss Formula No.1 can be safely taken alongside other food supplements and medications, even those typically prescribed for the regulation of Diabetes, high blood pressure and Thyroid problems. However, to be on the safe side, I would suggest you seek the wisdom of your personal doctor before proceeding and taking the supplements all together. RealDose may not directly interfere or contradict your other supplements but we have no sure way of knowing how your body will react in general. I hope this helps! Make it a healthy day!

Brrrrr. I have enough cold issues to forgo cold showers. It sounds like another idea that will pass off. All this stuff that is out there to magically reduce your weight/body fat, but who knows the effect on the body down the road. Most of us overweight people are that way because of an overactive body part. THE MOUTH. We are better off just saying “NO”.

    • Thank you, Merna, for your reply. You are correct in saying that shedding weight can be greatly helped by being careful about the foods that we put in our mouth. Healthy choices can go a long way to helping a person reach his or her goal weight.

I haven’t checked this month yet, but last month I lost 10 lbs on Real Dose. I just wanted to say I am very happy with your product and I really enjoy getting your daily emails. Your emails ring of such core honesty and truth which I have not seen anywhere on this subject. I sincerely Thank you. Cindy Jacobsen

I’m thinking exercise outside. Fall and winter in the cooler weather.

  29. Wayne Lerrigo says:

I live in the tropics and now have moved to Borneo near the equator. Since gaining weight I have had a craving for ice water and cold showers, and my pool is really cool. Here on the equator I only have cold showers and ice water. So before I build a pool I shall build a cold well I saw at a hotel. It is about 1.5 meters deep, wide enough for one person and the water is kept around or below 60 degrees F. Some days when the clouds move away it gets so hot you can get a heatstroke just driving in a car…gotta wear a hat in the car. So I hope that by stepping up the cold it will help thin the gut. So now I know.

  30. Carol says:

I’ve always loved to drink water, esp. very cold water. My question is; does too much water ‘flush out’ minerals, and also does drinking too much water before and during eating interfere with food digestion?

    • Hi Carol,

Thank you for writing in and for sharing your concerns with us! There really is no danger when you drink too much water, unless, you have an underlying medical condition such as a kidney problem. That said, your body will flush out excess minerals in order to avoid water retention. It will only take what it needs and the excess will be filtered and passed out via your urine and stool.

Also, drinking water before, during and after your meals will only help to facilitate better digestion. And, I do encourage you to drink as much as 2 glasses of water before eating if you want to lose weight.

Hope this helps, Carol! Have a healthy day!

  31. Carol says:

I have another question for you. Which is better for you……… skip your last pill if you can’t remember if you took it or not, or does it hurt you to take that 4th one?

    • Hi Carol,

It’s always best to not skip a dose in order to maintain your progress. If you should forget to take them 30 minutes before your meals, just take them as soon as you remember. Taking a 4th pill, even by accident, will not have any detrimental effects. However, you may want to be certain of your doses before deciding to take a fourth capsule. Hope this helps! Have a healthy day!

My first thought about this ‘brown fat’ and shivering off the weight/burning calories is to laugh! I spent 12 years in temperatures that were in the -20′s Celsius or more for about 6 months at a time and did not manage to lose any weight! I was freezing all the time and shivering most of the time. I have since moved south of that place where I only have those cold temperatures for a couple weeks then nice hot summers (30 – 40 Celsius) so I will continue with taking the real dose tablets and eating healthier and exercising. It is doing more for me in the past 3 months than 12 years of shivering did me! That is my input on a case study!

    • Hi Carol,

Thank you for writing in and for sharing your thoughts with us! Now that you mentioned it, the title does seem a little funny, at first glance! I am glad that RealDose Weight Loss Formula No.1 has been imparting such wonderful effects on you. Hope it continues and thank you again for sharing! Make it a healthy day!

  33. Emily Osborn says:

I had to give up on Formula 1 because it caused nervousness and sleeplessness. I noticed it had green coffee beans and I guess that was the culprit. Is there a product without green coffee beans that aids in fat reduction?

    • Hi Emily,

Thank you for writing in and for sharing your concerns with us! I am terribly sorry that you were unable to continue taking the Weight Loss Formula due to your sensitivity to green coffee beans. That said, we are currently working on several ventures which we hope will better address allergies and sensitivities to our product and yet, still help our clients with their journey to better health and weight loss. Hopefully, these will be ready for commercial production soon. Have a healthy day!

Now I understand why it was that as a broke college student I effortlessly lost 10# in the winter–in Western NY.
We barely had money, so we kept the heat at 55 degrees to keep the heating bills down. And then there was the frigid walk to campus….
I truly did shivver myself thin.
At this point, no thank you! However, I’m wondering if that cold feeling jumping into the pool, or upon getting out of the pool, with the breeze blowing on my wet body might do the trick?

    • Hi Linda,

Thank you for writing in and for sharing your thoughts with us! I can truly say that I know what you mean about the shivering walk to class. Also, not really keen on swimming in the freezing cold. Have a healthy day!

  35. Liz says:

I am moving into month three and am not getting the kind of results originally suggested nor what others have seen. i am not yet willing to give up, but it is looking dubious. I am careful about what i eat. recently read an article with regards to the positive benefits of both pomegranate seed oil and conjugated linoleic acid. Are these a part of the Formula 1 or would they be beneficial to add?

    • Hi Liz,

Thank you for writing in and for sharing your concerns with us! I am sorry that you have not yet been able to see the desired the desired results. As you are well on your way to your third month on RealDose Weight Loss Formula NO.1, it may be that other factors are hindering your progress. Unforeseen factors such as stress in the work place or home, lack of sleep, age or an underlying medical condition could all stand in the way of your weight loss progress. However, having one or more of these risk factors could make losing weight difficult but not impossible.

I encourage you to continue with your healthy diet and also add some physical exercise to get your metabolic rate going. Also, I want you to know that we have a support system in place to help guide our customers on their weight loss journey. Our Healthy Life Program gets you in touch with our diet and nutrition experts, and they can help you not only lose the weight but also guide you safely through your program.

      You can sign up here:

Conjugated Linoleic Acid and Pomegranate seed oil are not in the RealDose Weight Loss Formula NO.1. That said, the choice to add another food supplement to your daily diet will highly depend on what your body needs. It is for this reason that I highly recommend that you first check in with your personal doctor before making a commitment with any of the supplements you mentioned above. Hope this helps! Have a healthy day!

  36. Kira says:

I am desperate to loose my pregnancy/ baby weight after almost 2 years of trying. Healthy diet and exersize alone just don’t seem to work for me. I had a stroke a few months back and am on WARFARIN (a blood thinner). Anything with high amount of vitamin K can interfere with the blood thinners. Do any of the ingredients in Realdose have a high amount of vitamin K? Have you heard of anyone who has had a problem taking Realdose while on Warfarin? I also am caffeine intolerant. I have read that your product is totally decaffeinated and yet also have read that some people feel like they have had caffeine. Can you set the record straight on that, does it have caffeine or not?
    Looking forward to trying it!
    Thanks so much,

    • Hi Kira,

Thank you for writing in and for sharing your concerns with us! I am sorry to hear of your recent stroke and do hope that you make a full recovery very soon. The weight you gained from pregnancy will take some time to lose and this is where your determination is tested. We want you to know that you are not alone in your journey and we offer help through our Healthy Life Program (

RealDose Weight Loss Formula No.1 is not fortified with Vitamin K and is made with all natural botanical ingredients. However, I completely understand your concern and do strongly suggest that you peruse the list of ingredients to see if any of the ingredients therein would cause complications. As for your Caffeine concerns, RealDose capsule contains 133.33 mg of the Decaffeinated Green Coffee Bean Extract. The supplement may contain anywhere from 0 – 2.67 mgs of caffeine, an amount with essentially no physiologic effect. However, depending on your sensitivity to caffeine or coffee products, you may feel some of its effects.

Lastly, there is no direct reaction between RealDose Weight Loss Formula No.1 and Warfarin. However, while we are confident that our supplement is safe to use with other medications, we have no sure way of knowing how your body will react to both the supplement and your blood thinner. It is for this reason, along with your medical condition, that I do strongly advise you to speak with your personal doctor and get his thoughts on you adding a weight loss supplement to your regimen.

I wish you great success on your journey to better health, Kira! Have a healthy day!
